Problem Statement.

How do you create a user experience that bridges the gap between the legacy worker, and a generation raised on technology. 

Young adults entering the workforce in 2015 will have never grown up without digital technology. From the internet, to smart phones, these individuals are limited in their understanding of how traditional mechanical engineering works.
So how does one create a user experience that accommodates the legacy worker, who has spent their entire career physically drawing sketches, manually cataloging parts and components, and hand assembling the end product, while still giving a nod to the new generation of talent, who has never lived in a world that didn’t have computers, and total automation? That was the challenge presented to Siemens PLM.

THE PROCESS

Requirements

Identifying common functions was the top priority.
Several PL products share frameworks, UI’s, and servers, so pinpointing inconsistencies, redundancies, and off brand theming was the first step.

The focus then shifted to the individual product. Product testing, user interviews, and development meetings helped generate a comprehensive list of requirements.

Wireframes & Prototypes

From sketches on notebook paper and whiteboards, to high fidelity prototypes, CTO UX endeavored to create scalable, structurally sound user interfaces, that stood on top of a solid foundation of information architecture. A truly transformative initiative for Siemens PL.

Theming & Branding

To satisfy a brand that has stood strong for 170 years, CTO crafted a style that reflects the core values of Siemens. Doing away with cookie cutter “gloss” effects and employing a simplistic layout driven theme, that is accentuated by color psychology and information architecture.

Governance

User testing and focus groups, were not the only methods used to test the viability of our products. CTO UX developed a UX Metrics testing tool that focused on 4 KPI’s. Satisfaction, Ease of Use, Ease of learning, and Efficiency. The information gathered from this tool ensured that Siemens PL produced innovative, easy to use, high quality, high efficiency products, thad adhered to all UX, branding, and theming standards.[/bsf-info-box]

From 2012 – 2017 CTO UX Delivered over 200 creative/UX policies and best practice models that became the standard in which all PL products would be measured against.

Brand Colors

CTO UX created a brand and theme palette that satisfied not only the corporate standards, but also factored in color blindness and eye fatigue from prolonged use.

Iconography

CTO established two styles of icons (“Outline” and “Rich”) each has a unique purpose. The outline style was designated to represent common functionalities, while the rich style were used for individual products with functional groupings.

JT2GO 

JT is the common language of PLM and is the world’s most widely used 3D format. JT is the first ISO International Standard ( IS 14306-1) for 3D visualization and collaboration. Compact and accurate, JT is used throughout the product development lifecycle in all major industries to communicate the critical design information typically locked up inside a CAD file.

Siemens PLM Software customers rely on JT to be the most robust 3D visualization format available.

UX Metrics Testing Tool

The UXM is an internal testing tool used to ensure the viability and compliance of all products found within the Siemens PLM catalog.
